Sir, – As Chairman of Ingleby Barwick Community Partnership, I had the pleasure of attending the official opening of Ingleby Manor Free School on Friday, February 13.
The children entertained us with a variety of presentations including a gymnastic display, a review of their art work, drama and a short video, proving they are a real credit to their parents and to the school.
I would like to congratulate the trustees, a group of local parents, who set about increasing the number of secondary school places for the children of Ingleby Barwick.
Had Stockton Borough Council done their job properly, the free school would not have been needed. It seems that they are happy to bus more than 1,300 children everyday to Yarm and Eaglescliffe, instead of building a long overdue secondary school on the estate. The trustees fought on despite the opposition of the council. Was this opposition politically motivated by a Labour-dominated council, as free schools are a Tory initiative?
Thankfully, this dedicated group of people persevered, bringing a much-needed facility into the community, with an excellent principal in David Willard, who has appointed an enthusiastic group of teachers and staff.
I am sure this school will be a major success. Once again, well done to all involved.
