Sir, – We hope that more market towns will follow Richmond’s initiative to collate and publish information on organisations and their events (D&S Feb 6).

In Thirsk this approach is very successful. Volunteers daily update Thirsk and District events at https://www.visitthirsk.org.uk/pages/whatson.php and also keep an updated tally of local organisations at

https://www.visitthirsk.org.uk/pages/clubs.php.

In addition, at 6.30am every day we email a single sheet newspaper to about 200 local accommodation providers to give visitors the events of the day and an up-to-the minute weather forecast. There is a lot going on in and around Thirsk – the monthly newsletter runs to eight pages of events.

This is all done by the 30 volunteers who run Thirsk Tourist Information. We are self-funding from sales in the information office and the publicity we give local businesses – we have no other income.

We would be pleased to tell other market towns how we do this and encourage them to spread the word about the amazing variety of organisations and events in North Yorkshire.
