Sir, – I am writing to publicise a service that's very useful but is not widely known about.

A bus runs from the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton from 8am to 4pm on every even hour Monday to Friday, returning on every odd hour from James Cook Hospital, in Middlesbrough, until 5pm.

This I believe is only on trial until the end of March.

For me it has been a "lifesaver", as I am, like many other ladies of the "older" generation, happy to drive locally, but to drive to James Cook on winter roads and dark nights to visit my husband in the neurological intensive care unit filled me with dread.

The ambulance crew told me about the bus, which I used to visit him while he was there, leaving my car in a long stay car park.

I am sure that many other people use this service both for appointments and visiting, if they knew about it. The service must also ease congestion and parking at the hospital in Middlesbrough.

How about notices being displayed at doctors surgeries that are served by the Friarage and James Cook (mine was unaware of it)?

A very grateful thanks to Paul, the driver on duty, when I used the bus for a stress-free trip to visit and a safe journey there and back.
