Sir, - I would like to give Colin Hutson (D&S, January 23) the good news that there is a venue already in Northallerton providing a cultural and educational focus for the local community. I refer of course to the Forum which was run by Hambleton District Council until just over two years ago when it was taken over and is now run as a charity under community management and is proving to be very successful and well-supported by the people it serves. We have a small paid team who manage the day to day running of the building but there is also a group of very enthusiastic volunteers who man the box office, sell refreshments, run the bar and help look after all the numerous people who attend the events. Apart from being a letting space and being used by groups such as the U3A, carpet bowls and for adult education, the Forum provides entertainment via the cinema, NT Live, comedy, music, and travelling theatre. Local groups also present their shows at the Forum. We also provide space for private parties or meetings.

We have been gratified to see the increasing numbers of people attending as our mission has always been to answer the question "I wonder what is on at the Forum tonight?"

With the money we have made we are now updating the facilities within the space with better furniture, heating and air conditioning.

So if you have not made it yet come and see what we have to offer. We look forward to seeing you soon.

ANNE WALL

Chairman, board of trustees,The Forum.
