Sir, – As a regular reader of the DST I am fully aware of readers' concerns regarding public services, parking charges, planning issues, etc.

Do they realise that their cross on a ballot paper has resulted in what we have or have not? How many voters in the upcoming election will bother to look at the policies of the parties before they vote?

A couple of years ago a study found that most people vote according to their parents' allegiance. A friend said to me "it'll be that Labour lot". I asked him why he voted Conservative. "Because my dad did". At this we burst out laughing. Sadly, it is not a laughing matter.
