Sir, – Joe Willis (A Dales Life, D&S, December 12) does a wonderful job of skewering the Tories’ dishonest and patronising leaflet.

Their new candidate seems to have learned from the incumbent that you ‘work hard on behalf of local residents’ by being photographed next to some signage or people who actually deliver services. Odd that he wasn’t pictured outside one of the libraries that are threatened with losing their professional staff because of the government’s stealth austerity – cutting grants to local authorities and forcing them to cut services.

A more recent leaflet has a front-page strapline – "backing local business". The leaflet was printed in Leeds. The earlier one was printed in Washington, Tyne and Wear. In this, as in so many other ways, they just don’t get it, do they?
