Sir, – Further to the article by Joanna Morris and letter by Pauline Rees in last week’s D&S Times (Dec 12), I strongly believe that cycling should be banned in all pedestrian areas in Darlington.

I live near the Northgate underpass, and on most days walk into the town centre via this route. On a good day, I’ve encountered only one cyclist whizzing past me, using this pedestrian route as a cycle race track.

On a bad day, at least two or three race through in succession, and have on many occasions been very close to being knocked down.

It is highly dangerous, as the underpass comprises bends and sloping surfaces, which seem to invite cyclists to gain speed going downhill with subsequent momentum on the uphill sections.

A sign clearly marks that it’s a pedestrian route, with no mention of cycling being allowed also.

So, it appears that, although cycling may not actually be allowed in this section of town, its connection to the centre encourages its use as such.

Wherever one walks in town, including pathways in parks, such as in South Park, it’s necessary to keep a constant eye out for those inconsiderate enough to cycle at speed.

Cyclists should keep to properly designated cycle tracks or use the road itself (and I fully support cycling as a way of getting around) but should park their bikes when in town and walk.
