Sir, – There is still a real danger of flooding behind the Tees barrage because of climate change due to torrential rain.
What a pity no scheme to put lock gates on the Skerne was included in the recent flood prevention proposals.
Large ancient Roman meadows are to be found on the A1 at Bradbury and the upper reaches of the Skerne flows right through them.
A couple of lock gates to hold back the water at times of high rainfall on these meadows would prevent flooding. Croft, Neasham, Hurworth, Stapleton and Yarm could be safe once again as the arrival of water at the joining of the rivers Tees and Skerne could be usefully delayed in times of crisis during torrential rain.
Victoria Embankment and Darlington Town Centre need protection too from the recent downpours we have experienced.
