Sir, – I had a need to seek medical advice early last Saturday as my partner was very unwell following day surgery at Northallerton Hospital two days earlier. As the surgery in Hawes was shut, I rang the 111 service. It was made very clear to me during the telephone conversation with 111 that no one would come out to the house, and the only option was to drive one-and-a-quarter hours to Catterick on a foggy Saturday morning. On arrival in Catterick I discovered that the out of hours centre moved two weeks ago to a health centre in the town. However, the official signs still direct you to the old site, as does the surgery website. Army staff there helpfully confirmed it was shut and had moved but were not certain whether in the town or in Northallerton.

My advice, ignore 111. If you are really concerned, go to A&E or ring for an ambulance. I am going to in future.

David Braybrook, Hawes.
