Sir, – Far from not showing leadership regarding the Wynyard option (D&S Times, Nov 21),James Wharton has shown great common sense in stopping public money being wasted on a hospital in the wrong place with no transport links for staff and the patients – the majority live far from the Wynyard site and closer to James Cook.

The current hospitals at North Tees and Hartlepool have had millions spent updating them, are close to Hardwick and other council estates so the workers and local patients can almost walk in, whilst Wynyard are has no council housing.

Further, the Butterwick and the Hartlepool hospices which were built next to the existing hospitals upon which they rely would be left high and dry, in turn wasting the money given to the charities to build these very much-needed places.

The Japanese build their hospitals adjacent or on top of railway stations and bus stations to give ease of access. Surely, we should place our hospitals at the centre of our transport systems. New locations are not needed in inaccessible countryside miles from anywhere.
