Sir, – Yes, Capt Cook’s Monument as we have never seen it before – a very striking, and attractive, picture from a drone-mounted camera on this page last week (D&S Times Reader's View, Oct 31). But drones look set to join Chinese lanterns as an issue in the countryside.
Their noise will impair the tranquillity many visitors, especially walkers, seek. When commonplace, drones will also pose a serious danger in popular places. Air traffic control might be needed to prevent Boxing Day drone collisions at Cook’s Monument and Roseberry Topping, chief destinations for Teessiders to walk off the Christmas Day excess.
Before these undesirable situations develop, the use of drones should be confined to licensed operators, such as estate agents and structural engineers.
