Sir, – On the front page of last week's North Yorkshire Advertiser the police stated that there has been a recent change in the firearms laws.

This means that people who own a weapon which was used by a relative, say in the Normandy landings or a captured German weapon which has been in a family for 60 years or more, has to be handed in to the police. This is not so.

There has been no change in the law as the police suggest has been authorised by the Government or Home Office, so I would urge anyone who has a firearm, whether it is licensed or not or it is a reminder of the D Day landings which belonged to a member of their family, then keep it.

The police have no right to take it off you; they are not authorised to change the firearms law themselves, so ignore them.
