Sir, – Bedale Library has newly renovated premises, lively displays and very professional, helpful, friendly staff who deserve the support of all those who value having a library in the town. Current proposals from North Yortkshire County Council threaten it with closure – unless volunteers come forward to run it – and the staff with redundancy.

I wish to draw the attention of readers in the Bedale area to an "Information Drop-In Event" in the Library on Wednesday, November 19, from 2-5pm. Figures supplied by the county council show that Bedale Library has 3,125 members. They also show that 33 percent are under 16; perhaps older ones could come after school? A further 31.5 per cent are aged between 25 and 54, and likely to be at work.

However, there are also 896 members over 55. Some, of course, will be at work, but I am seeking your assistance in getting the message out to them in particular to attend this meeting, and challenge the county council’s representative and to ensure that it is a consultation and not just a fait accompli.
