Sir, – Mr Coombs' letter (D&S Times Oct 31) shows he spent a lot of time walking between the existing and the prospective car park and the market cross in an effort to prove the Gateway park was not too far for "old people and children" to walk into Bedale.

He failed to appreciate that the point of my letter (D&S, Oct 24) was to propose a solution to the parking problem by converting the North End long-stay parking into a short-term car park giving visitors to Bedale the chance to visit without a 400-yard walk.

The visitors would be able to park in the centre of town for a limited period of time for a small charge.

I allowed for residents to park free and suggested an alternative long-stay park near Bedale Hall.

I fear that if one of the town's car parks is sold it will then be built upon which will only increase Bedale's parking problem.
