Sir, – May I thank all the many people who helped with the recent month-long exhibition of Northallerton clocks held at Tennants of Leyburn: our host Rodney Tennant and his staff; our sponsors Archers Removals, Barkers Department Store and Swinton Park Hotel; the 35 owners who lent the 45 clocks and watches on display; the many Northallerton businesses who gave raffle prizes for the charity preview; the 29 volunteers who gave their time to act as stewards, some of them several times; and many others who assisted in various ways.
It appears the last such one-town exhibition was a generation ago and this was the first in the North-East. The comparative rarity of the exhibition was reflected in the number of knowledgeable clock enthusiasts who visited from far and wide. But the exhibition was also attended by many visitors from Northallerton and elsewhere hereabouts who appreciated the display even if they were not knowledgeable about clocks. In all more than 2,500 visitors attended.
The exhibition was a resounding success, praised both by enthusiasts and those with no previous knowledge of clocks, and this was most gratifying. Even more gratifying was the sum of £4,700 raised for the scanner appeal at the Friarage Hospital.
