Sir, – The great leader of UKIP is fond of saying that we are giving £55,000,000 to the EU every day.
According to the Office of National Statistics, who I would rather believe than a politician on the make, our net payment to the EU last year was £11.3bn.
I divided that by 365 (for leaders of UKIP that is the number of days in a year) and the actual payment was £30.96bn. The previous year it was even lower. This is still an enormous sum but it is still only 0.7% of the nation's GNP.
