Sir, – The controversy over Stockton High Street shows no signs of abating, with the council now disputing the LDA survey over the number of empty shops. In the meantime, it still looks like a building site.
I have talked to shopkeepers and traders in Stockton and propose this “common sense” action plan to get the shoppers back into Stockton:
1. No more unnecessary redevelopments or vanity projects
2. Two hours free parking every day
3. Switch off the fountain on market days to allow more market stalls on the High Street.
4. Provide all-day free parking whenever the market is on, to encourage more people into Stockton and more market stalls to come to Stockton town centre.
This measure would, I believe, actually raise revenue for the council. One of UKIP’s national policies is to encourage councils to provide more free parking in town centres.
I think these actions would help our shopkeepers in Stockton and aid the regeneration of the High Street that we all want.
