Sir, – The letter from Marcus Grover and the comments of Charles Barker (D&S Times, Oct 24) last Friday, set out very clearly the damage that would follow the development of a designer outlet village at Scotch Corner.

However, not only would the proposal impact on shops in the nearby towns, but it would affect what has regrettably become an important source of revenue for local councils.

Unfortunately, parking charges are now widespread in the towns of North Yorkshire, and if shoppers are attracted to out-of-town stores, with free parking, income from parking charges will inevitably be reduced.

This in turn would tempt councils to increase their parking charges, which would add further to the decline of town centres.
