Sir, – I refer to proposals for the Bedale Gateway car park and how it would be funded (D&S, Oct 10 and letters, Oct 17).

The Bridge Street and Auction car parks are essential. It would be crazy if Hambleton Council decided to sell any of them.

If the council cannot afford the Gateway car park without selling an existing car park then, too bad, we will have to do without the new car park.

The Gateway car park is too far away from the town centre shops. Old people and children will never want to walk such a long distance. Potential visitors will drive on and park in the middle of Leyburn.

The North End long-stay park is always full. It therefore never provides any parking for visitors coming to Bedale. It should be made a short stay park limited to two hours and be subject to a small charge. North End house residents would be exempt.

Some extra long-stay parking should be provided at the front of Bedale Hall, alongside the existing parking, to compensate for the loss of the existing long-stay parking.

It is high time the council took some action to indicate which road has priority across the Bridge Street and Sussex Street junction and restricted some parking close to the junction to allow more turning space for larger vehicles.
