Sir, – I refer to your picture of work on the A1 in the 1960s (From Our Archive, D&S Times Weekend Times Oct 3).
I can remember the 1960s upgrade. Soon there will be none of the old square-looking bridges left as the present upgrade takes shape.
The civil engineer responsible for them was Alec Findlay who fought throughout the 1914/18 war on the western front before studying engineering at the then Glasgow Technical College.
He was a founder member of Northallerton Caledonian Society.
