Sir, – The unusual view of Semerwater taken by an Askrigg reader (D&S, Aug 8) brought back many memories.
Brought up in the area in the thirties, the lake with its mystic and legends was always a popular place. The favourite legend of a beggar who arrived on the scene desperate for food and drink and was turned away by every house but the last one who gave him a feed. As he walked away he turned and cursed the lake.
"Semerwater rise Semerwater sink
Save none but the little man,
Who gave me meat and drink."
And the waters of the lake rose and destroyed every house but the last one.
