Sir, – While it is disappointing that only a third of over-65s in Yorkshire use social media (report by clothing firm Chums), I am sure the proportion of “silver surfers” is much higher.

The internet has been a boon for us older folk. We can shop on line, pay bills, book trains and accommodation and do many other routine tasks quickly and safely. Best of all, we can keep in touch with friends and relatives who live far away.

My nephew, his wife and young family live in Switzerland: I visit them once a year but have the great pleasure of seeing them all regularly through Facebook. Two-year old Lily is already snowboarding! On my travels I use Twitter to let my friends, far-flung and near, know what I am doing. It’s great to get their responses and comments.

I would encourage all senior citizens to go on the internet. There are many courses for beginners, and you can “log on” at your local library if you can’t afford your own computer. Of course, there is no substitute for personal contact, but going on line can enhance your life – just do it.
