Sir, – On Monday, July 28, at least six large vehicles parked in Skeeby to carry out road repairs. They managed to cause traffic jams back to Scotch Corner and also to Richmond. They also damaged a water main.

The county council had brought in private contractors to do repairs that its own workmen should have done. At a considerable cost to us taxpayers.

In his letter (D&S, Aug 8) he claims misinformation and innuendo has been spread about this matter and about him. Here is the truth.

After a fatal accident, Cllr Michael Heseltine had tarmac bumps laid through the village. He then learned there should have been meaningful discussions beforehand, so a meeting was held in the village hall. Cllr Heseltine ignored the wishes of those attending. He dictated that his bumps were staying. To do otherwise would have meant admitting he was wrong.

He claims he received advice from professionals. They must have been the salesmen who sold bumps and traffic lights. No expert would recommend a system that slowed small cars down to ten mph and allowed HGVs and buses to do 40mph in a 30mph zone.

Now after paying for the cost of four sets of bumps and repairs, we could have had Matrix speed indicators on every lamp post
