Sir, – Events held over the week commemorating the First World War were thought provoking and a respectful memorial to those men from Thirsk, Sowerby and the surrounding villages who lost their lives or were injured.

The events began with a service of peace and reflection at St Oswald's on Sunday evening. Then, in glorious sunshine on the morning of the 4th, many people joined in with market stall holders and shoppers in a service of remembrance. A very well attended service was held, again in the market place in the evening.

The Royal British Legion played in the morning and unaccompanied hymns were sung in the evening when were joined by soldiers from Topcliffe Barracks. Over 500 Candles were distributed and at 11pm they were extinguished and a silence kept.

There was a true feeling of community, the silence followed by the last post was moving and brought the day to a fitting close.

For five days the exhibition of Choices held and organised by The Quakers under the supervision of Geof Sewell in the Friends Meeting Room gave the public an opportunity to learn more about the war and in particular how it affected local people.

The work put into this exhibition was most appreciated, from the poems of school children and art work by sixth formers to the many items and memories shared by local people.

Thanks need to be conveyed to so many people, it would be difficult to name them all but especially we would like to thank the Quakers for the instigation of these events.
