Sir, – Would the Leader of Hambleton District Council please tell us what the chief executive has done to justify the massive £25,000 a year increase in his salary, bringing his annual income to £125,000 plus, no doubt, pension contributions and fringe benefits.

In addition, we now learn that the abortive attempt to relocate the police headquarters has cost the taxpayer a massive £620,000. Could we please have a breakdown of this sum. Why did it cost £620,000. before they accepted what they had been told for nothing, that this was a bad idea?

No doubt the police headquarters fiasco is to be laid at the door of North Yorkshire County Council, which just goes to show how massively over-governed we are, with vast layers of jobsworths, consultants, advisers and hangers-on, to be supported by taxpayers who see more and more of their incomes disappearing into the bureaucratic coffers while receiving fewer and fewer services in return.

R ROBINSON
