Sir, – I agree with Joe Willis (Dales Diary, August 8), let's put Le Tour to bed now.

Hmmmm, I know let's have a motorcycling race instead, Yorkshire's answer to the Isle of Man TT ?

The race could start at Wensley with Lord and Lady Bolton presenting the trophies.

Just inside the gates could be the paddocks and the teams' campervans. The village hall could provide information, souvenirs and toilet facilities, along with the local front gardens.

Setting off up the A614 towards Hawes ... but wait a minute we would have to rename a few places just to get into the spirit of the race. So going by the Wensleydale Heifer (Foggarty's Fri-up) via Aggo'sgarth to Hislop Hawes. Over the river and up and over John Mcguinness Mountain (Buttertubs) into Dunlop Dale (Swaledale), through Molyneux Muker, Cummingside and Read, over Guy Martin Moor to Shaky Leyburn and back to Wensley Sheen. Voila! Whoops, wrong race.

In between race days we could have a classic bike show and autojumble on Shaky Leyburn show ground. A bit of trialing in Dunlop Dale, a hill climb up Pen Hill, wall of death ride in Scarth Nick quarry, a sprint on Cams High road plus a speedway track round Bob Foster's camp site. We could get Dougie Lampkin to perform stunts over bales and tractors at Metcalfe's Farm.

What about logistics? Well we could have John Blackie in his little white bus providing roving transport, a mobile post office, while serving burgers and chips and taking bookings for his holiday cottages all at the same time.

There would be numerous camp sites and home stays provided by the locals, the B&Bs, hotels and pubs would be full and everyone would make a fortune.

And when will this event take place you may ask? Well may I suggest the second week in September when harvesting has finished and so as we don't clash with the Manx GP.

We could call it "T'up and down Dale TT" or just '"Yorkshire TT".

Come on Yorkshire folk, let's do it, let's rise to the challenge and make "loadsa brass".

So how's that for tourism Mr Verity?
