Sir, – On behalf of Yarm1914 Centenary Commemoration Group can I thank everyone who came to the events on August 2/3, and everyone who came to the candlelight vigil on Monday, August 4, and everyone involved in the planning of these events.

Ninety-one men from Yarm will be remembered for their sacrifice and will not be forgotten.

I would also like to thank Maureen Almond who helped to produce the fantastic poems produced by the children from Yarm Primary, Levendale Primary, Kirklevington Primary and Layfield Primary schools, Judith Gill and the glass poppy project (Larks Song), made by children from Yarm, Conyers, Egglescliffe and Teesside High Schools, as well as the people from the Moses Project.

The poppy stands were made by prisoners from Kirklevington Grange and are a fantastic integral part of the event.

We will be displaying the poppies on September 13 at the Women of the Great War event in Yarm Parish Church, and Remembrance Sunday.

I would also like to thank all the members of the Yarm1914 group, who are responsible for these events: Maureen Millburn, Chris Stuart, Chris Kerr, Laura Allan, Simon McCullow, John Rhodes, John Beeley, Heritage officer for Stockton Museum services, Philip Addison, the late Bill Baxter (Baxter’s Trench is named after him), members of the Royal British Legion, Hartburn Sea Scouts, the cadet forces, Major Flannery, the Mayor of Stockton, Deputy Mayor of Darlington, Major Scrope and Lord Crathorne. You all play an important role within the community.

If anyone has relatives from Yarm, who lost their lives in the Great War, and are listed on our role of honour, and would like a glass poppy that has been dedicated to that person, please contact yarm1914@gmail.com and we will hand it over.

Yarm1914 endeavours to include all the community in these events, which will continue up to Armistice 2018.

PETER J MONCK

Chairman, Yarm1914
