Sir, – I am responding to plans put forward for Thirsk Market Place by Councillor Gareth Dadd (D&S, Jul25).

I notice that despite over a thousand signatures asking for five trees to be replaced there are only three featured in the plan.

I also note that trees have to be appropriate to their location with root containers. What are the criteria for appropriate trees, what varieties are being considered and which tree expert will make the decision as to which type of tree is selected? This is very important because of the reaction to the removal of trees in the first place and if the replacements are unacceptable to residents we will be back to square one, which no one wants. If the root containers mentioned are planters of some sort this will not be suitable as the trees will remain small and not be a feature or provide enough shade.

The plan states that a clean and tidy community space will be provided, which I’m sure is what everyone wants, but on carefully looking over the diagram I can only see one waste bin. Will this be adequate considering the amount of food sold around the Market Place?

The illustration and diagram do not show shop signs, a large icecream advert, a large litter bin or any display from the fruit shop.

These are features in the Market Place everyday. Does this mean they will no longer be there? I cannot really work out the scale, but would like to be assured that there will be adequate room for mobility scooters, wheelchairs and mums with buggies to move around this communal space easily.

I hope there is a lot of positive response to this plan so that Thirsk can move forward with its new design Market Square.

LESLEY ROLFE St James Green, Thirsk.
