Sir, – It is of great concern that traders are suffering badly under the new parking charges regime in Northallerton (D&S letters, July 25), and some are thinking that in a few months’ time they might have closed.

We have recently come back from the Northumberland after six relaxing days, where the local councils have introduced a ‘no parking charges’ policy in Alnwick, Bamburgh, Berwick, Hexham, Morpeth and Rothbury, where drivers just display a disc.

The streets were busy with visitors and shoppers. When talking to local traders they were happy with their council’s new policy to encourage more trade from residents and visitors and there was a real buzz about the towns.

Why can’t our local councils in Richmondshire and Hambleton be positive and encourage trade with just parking discs, otherwise this serious decline in trade could have a knock-on effect with many aspects of life in the area.
