Sir, – Looking at the Roadwise advert in last week’s Le Tour supplement about cyclists I couldn’t help thinking there should be one which reads “Think Motorist”.

In the past few weeks driving in the Dales has become a nightmare as there seems to be no way of avoiding cyclists or those supporting them. It is very surprising that there haven’t been any fatalities.

Those at danger from the often inconsiderate behaviour of cyclists include horse riders. Horses cannot hear cyclists approaching and if these are then too close when whizzing past them they may rear or bolt in fright. The very large groups of cyclists are a major problem on narrow, winding roads. It is hair-raising trying to pass clusters which are three to four abreast and up to ten bikes in depth, especially if some of the cyclists are wobbling about and knocking into each other.

If motorists try to avoid the Tour de France route it is still likely they will meet cyclists, sometimes most unexpectedly. Last weekend a large support vehicle was parked in a layby at Scarth Nick, Wensleydale, on the opposite side of the road to the approaching cyclists. This meant that as a motorist came over the crest of the hill he was suddenly confronted by cyclists crossing the road to reach the support van. Some were standing in the road drinking water.

So our message to all those cyclists who plan to experience the Dales for themselves after Le Tour is: please have care and caution for other road users.
