Sir, – To clarify a couple of points in your item about High Street parking charges in Northallerton (D&S, June 27): the reference to 429 people employed by members of Northallerton Retail & Business Forum relates to those employed by just six of our number – the actual figure is much higher. Secondly, there was a reference to charges of 80p an hour following an initial free 30 minutes. This is not the case and is a misconception commonly held.

Notices have been stuck onto the new pay-and-display machines warning motorists that they can either opt for a ticket for 30 mins free parking or pay for one hour or two hours. There is no return after any of the three options within three hours.

Our members are determined to make the best of a bad lot and strive to attract visitors to our town, but we fear they are being put off by a poorly-devised scheme.

We will continue to press for a free first hour, combined with the option to pay for a further hour, and would welcome feedback via info@shopnorthallerton.org

GARETH DANT Secretary, Northallerton Retail & Business Forum.
