Sir, – I really enjoyed Nicholas Rhea’s grand tour of England as a 16-year-old cyclist (D&S Times, June 20).

The Hambleton Road Club of which he was a member has no connection with the club of the same name which is Northallerton-based.

The original club of which I was secretary was made up of members of the Cyclists Touring Club Hardriders section. It was compulsory to be a member of the CTC.

Peter Walker (real name of author Nicholas Rhea) of course was a CTC member and he would meet up with the hardriders for club runs at starting points such as Lockwood Beck having ridden up from Glaisdale. I believe at that time he was a police cadet.

The Hambleton Road Club was affiliated to the British League of Racing Cyclists. The CTC Hardriders is still very active after all these years and carries on the aims of its founder, the late Joe Kilborn of Darlington.
