Sir, – Richard Wells' letter last week (D&S Mar 28) correctly drew attention to North Yorkshire Police’s misplaced priorities over the serious issue of law-breaking motorcyclists on our roads.
Rather than polite requests for motorcyclists to moderate their behaviour, a more helpful starting point for the police would be to acknowledge publicly, and in plain language, what is actually going on here, which is that a large number of motorcyclists come to North Yorkshire specifically to break the law by taking part in recreational speeding.
Judging by the evidence on display every weekend in our little corner of North Yorkshire, the constabulary appear unable, or unwilling, to take any effective action to stop it.
Arranging for the North Yorkshire Police PR staff to organise a press release and photo opportunity focusing on motorcyclists’ safety is all very well – and very easy. However, senior officers would be better occupied giving some serious thought to how they might actually do something to sort this problem out.
