Sir, – Am I alone in thinking that North Yorkshire Police’s efforts to improve motor cycle safety (“Police campaign to reduce death toll of motorcyclists”, D&S, March 21) has been tried before? And not that long ago.
Pamphlets, posters, advice on choosing a helmet and interaction at events didn’t work then, if the number of fatalities produced by police (up 200 per cent) are correct. So why does the deputy chief constable think they will work now?
He might wish to consider showing some tough love rather than a soft touch. Come down hard on those who use our roads as a race track and intimidate local drivers when they hunt in packs. True, it doesn’t tick the politically-correct boxes of the chattering classes, Mr Madgwick, but it might prove more effective.
RICHARD WELLS East Witton, Leyburn.
