Sir, – On three separate nights this past week I have got behind three tractors travelling on busy roads in the dark, towing trailers or implements and with their rear work lights glaring. I was blinded by these.

It is now a regular practice which is downright dangerous and illegal.

The law states white lights to the front, red lights to the rear.

If the implements or trailers are not fitted with side and rear lights they should not be on the road at night. I should mention that many years ago when I was farming I had my collar felt by the local bobby for doing the self-same thing – a time when the local copper had a word in your ear with the warning that next time you’re in his book. Unlike today.

I thought I would mention that in case I was accused of farmer-bashing.

So come on you tractor lads, use common sense and consider other road users and switch off those powerful rear work lights when on public roads.

MALCOLM RAINFORTH Knaresborough.
