Scheme allows heads to plan schools online

A NEW initiative is allowing head teachers to organise building and maintenance work for their schools online.

School Projects Direct has been set-up by Darlington-based Niven Architects and builders T Manners & Sons of Bishop Auckland to provide head teachers with a onestop shop for building, design and maintenance work.

The site also allows pupils to use technology such as web cams to follow the work as it progresses and teachers the chance to use it in the school curriculum.

Schools no longer have to rely on local authorities to carry out the work and head teachers can now approach the private sector directly.

Simon Crowe, Niven Architects director, said: “The great thing is that we can work with the children and the building project can become part of the curriculum.

“Protecting the environment is a key element of young people’s education. We can show them what is available in terms of energy- efficient materials and sustainable sources such as wind power, ground source heating, solar power and rainwater harvesting.”
