Architect firm celebrates 25 years with design award

A FIRM of architects based in Stokesley has celebrated 25 years in business by winning a prestigious design award for its work on a North-East healthcare centre.

P+HS Architects was founded by Chris Potter and Rowland Holmes- Smith in 1984, and works to design buildings that are sustainable and flexible, to be used by a wide range of people.

From its Stokesley headquarters, and offices in Leeds, the firm now employs more than 60 people and has gained a reputation for designing community healthcare facilities.

The firm was named designer of the best healthcare building at the Northern region Local Authority Building Control Building Excellence Awards for its work on the new Washington Primary Care Centre, for Sunderland PCT.

The new £8.9m centre provides accommodation over two floors, with services such as ultrasound and X-ray, planned care for people with chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, and community renal dialysis with 15 treatment beds for patients.

Joe Biggs, director of P+HS in Stokesley, said: “Over the past 25 years we have worked to develop extremely good relationships with many NHS clients.

“P+HS now work across the UK with many specialist healthcare providers and use our experience to develop design solutions that will continue to work in the future.”

The firm recently took on a project slightly different to their usual remit, by designing the new sustainable mixed-use development for the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, on the site of the Great Yorkshire Showground, which includes office accommodation, and the Fodder shop and café, specialising in Yorkshire produce.
