A WENSLEYDALE holiday park has been voted one of the top 100 in the UK.

Akebar Park, near Bedale, has been voted by readers of Practical Caravan Magazine as one of the best places in the UK for touring caravans and camping. It was one of only seven North-East sites to make it on to the list.

The voters praised its "relaxed and peaceful atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff, and great facilities".

Akebar Park came under a new management team less than two years ago and has undergone an extensive programme of improvements.

This includes investment in the grounds, the 18-hole golf course and a complete refurbishment of the on site pub and restaurant, The Friars Head.

As well as attracting holiday makers, Akebar has more than 190 holiday homes and lodges under ownership and attracts more than 30 new owners every year. The golf courses and restaurant are also popular with locals from Bedale, Leyburn and the surrounding area.

Jack Reynar, park manager, said: "We are delighted that Akebar Park has achieved this recognition and that the hard work we have put in is being appreciated."

The next stages of development will include a further extension to the Friars Head Restaurant and the introduction of Foot Golf, both scheduled for this summer.
