ONE of the UK’s top female chefs has joined forces with Middlesbrough College.

Frances Atkins, a fellow of the Masterchefs of Great Britain and one of only six female Michelin starred chefs in the UK, will help the college team deliver world class training to catering and hospitality students.

The co–owner of The Yorke Arms near Harrogate, has held one Michelin star continuously since 2003.

The partnership brings the college a step closer to launching a School of Culinary Excellence to raise the profile of the industry across the North-East.

Zoe Lewis, Middlesbrough College principal and chief executive, said: "We wanted to team up with an inspirational chef who could bring a new dimension to our catering and hospitality department, and Frances was the perfect choice.

"She’s well-known for her impressive knowledge of food, classic techniques and a talent for presentation. She’s also renowned for using fresh, seasonal, organic local produce – she’s the perfect role model for ambitious students."

Frances will deliver a series of masterclasses at the college and will work with teaching staff to ensure students achieve the highest professional standards.

In return the college will support The Yorke Arms with apprenticeship and training programmes – teaching staff will also add to their own experience by working at the restaurant.

Frances said: "This is a very exciting project – realising, discovering, and nurturing young northern talent in the hospitality sector."

She will work with staff and students to create new menu choices for Waterside Brasserie – the college’s training restaurant, including a Frances Atkins starter, main course and dessert.

There are also plans to host a pop-up Yorke Arms at Middlesbrough College, where guests would enjoy an Evening of Fine Dining.
