A FAMILY-RUN North Yorkshire brewery is in the running to win £30,000 of government support.

Wold Top Brewery of Hunmanby, near Scarborough, has been named the best growth story in Yorkshire & Humber in the Great Faces of British Business competition and now needs the public to vote for it to to take the top prize.

Gill Mellor, director, said: "We're thrilled to have been selected as a regional winner. There's a wealth of innovative small and medium-sized businesses out there and it's great to be recognised as one of them. We would love to win the national award so please show your support by voting for us on greatbusiness.gov.uk/competition."

The farm-based brewery was founded in 2003 and produces real ales from its own high quality home and Wolds-grown malting barley, combined with chalk filtered water from the farm's borehole.

The family converted a barn into a microbrewery which, in its first year, produced 300 gallons a week, with no paid staff. Last year it produced 4,300 gallons a week and has 16 paid employees. In the next year, the brewery will increase in size by 150 per cent.

The brewery has won several awards for the quality of its beer including a coveted Three Star Gold Award at the Guild of Fine Foods Great Taste awards. It also won three awards for its green initiatives in 2013. New business with Sainsbury's and Waitrose, together with a flourishing export order book has resulted in a 40 per cent increase in sales year on year.

Voting closes on February 23 with the winner announced on March 3.

The top prize includes an advertising campaign worth £30,000; an iPad Air and unlimited BT Wi-Fi for 12 months from BT Business; and a package of export support from UK Trade & Investment (UKTI).
