NORTHUMBRIAN Water has won a £22m joint venture contract to design, build, finance and operate a new waste water treatment works in Gibraltar.

The deal includes a 20 year operation and maintenance phase for the works which features two water systems - one supplying drinking water and the other using sea water for all sanitary purposes. The works will use existing underground tunnels in the Rock and will be completely enclosed and landscaped.

Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar (HMGoG) awarded the contract to the Joint Venture between Northumbrian Services Limited, part of Northumbrian Water Group (NWG),and UK-based Modern Water Services Limited (MWSL).

The project will be spearheaded by Gibraltar’s Technical Services Department and the Department of the Environment and MWSL will be the lead contractor for design and build of the plant.

It will treat waste water from the 30,000 residents and 30,000 workers who travel across the Spanish border together and tourists.

Northumbrian Water already operates a joint venture with HMGoG, through NWG company AquaGib Ltd, which has the long-term deal for the supply of Gibraltar’s drinking water.
