AN AWARD-WINNING farm-based ice cream business has opened a seventh parlour and created more jobs.

Archers Jersey Ice Cream, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, has opened a parlour in Redcar and have taken on two apprentices as well as full and part-time staff.

John and Susan Archer of New Moor Farm, Walworth Gate, near Darlington, began establishing their Jersey herd in 2002 after losing their original Holstein Friesians to the foot and mouth epidemic.

They have been at the farm since 1976 and today the Jersey’s supply all the milk for their own ice cream parlours and franchises at Walworth Gate, Richmond, Northallerton, Yarm, Jesmond and Liverpool.

New funding from Barclays Business enabled them to launch their latest parlour.

Mr Archer said: “Barclays funding and advice has enabled us to weather the recent economic downturn, restructure our finances and expand with the new ice cream parlour in Redcar.

“It’s taken a lot of hard work on all sides but we have fully restructured our finances and we’re now confident we have good processes in place to secure the future of the business for the next generation.”
