A YOUNG North Yorkshire entrepreneur has won the contract to supply all the uniforms for racecourse staff at the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grand National.

AJ Swinbank, 24, who runs 121 Workwear in Leyburn, is making bespoke jackets, fleeces and beanie hats for staff at this month’s Cheltenham Festival and next month’s Grand National at Aintree.

The two contracts, and another to supply work uniforms for Ecolab UK, a leading hygiene services company, will take 121 Workwear’s annual turnover past £1m.

Mr Swinbank, who founded the company 18 months ago, was particularly delighted to win the racecourse contracts.

He said: “These are iconic sporting events, not just in this country, but around the world, and we are honoured to be part of them.

“These two contracts will also enable me to hire more staff, taking them into double figures. They are also a resounding endorsement of the quality of our work and the fact that we can provide new staff clothing to order, on time and within budget.”

Mr Swinbank, the son of leading Yorkshire racehorse trainer Ann Duffield, recently invested £100,000 to treble the size of the Leyburn production unit and quadruple its production facility to 2,000 garments a week. It includes the latest screen printing facilities and a new sales office.

He said: “These are tremendously exciting times for the company. I have a dedicated and committed workforce, who are determined to make 121 Workwear a success. I also have complete confidence in the clothes we are producing and the client feedback has been amazing.”

He originally ran a menswear clothing brand and won the North East Local Business Accelerators competition when only 22.

From there he diversified into personal and bespoke clothing for businesses and promotions and stocks 15,000 garments to offer a complete service for all types of clothing, from T-shirts to fleeces, footwear, hoodies and blazers.

The company has more than 500 clients including York Racecourse, Wensleydale Creamery and Goal Soccer Centres.
