Johnson agrees new four-year contract with Middlesbrough

Teenage Middlesbrough winger Adam Johnson has agreed a new four-year deal that will commit him to the club until the summer of 2010.

The Sunderland-born left winger, 19 next month, has agreed an improved contract.

Southgate said: "I'm pleased that we've managed to ensure Adam will stay with us for at least the next four years.

"He has shown already, when playing for the reserves and the first team, that he's got great potential.

"Now it's for us to try to develop that potential and for Adam to display the desire that will enable him to push on and become a regular first team player."

An England U-19 international, Johnson played 19 first team games last season after making his Boro debut as a 17-year-old UEFA Cup substitute against Sporting Lisbon in March 2005.

Johnson is one of 16 players produced by the club's Academy who appeared for the first team in 2005-06.
